Here's a fact- every single human being starts off feeling hyper altruistic and overly empathic and "why would you do that", and every single human being has a pain threshold for suffering for themselves or loved ones, which if exceeded, kills that stupid notion and makes you realise that the world's resources are limited, so if you don't get the most you can for you and yours, you're letting other people accumulate resources which can potentially give them power over you, which can give them the means to inflict suffering on your loved ones.

That's not really any different to what I'm saying, honestly. That's how you find people worth giving a damn about. Putting your loved ones first requires having loved ones. Put yourself first to find them, then put them first when you do. Everyone I've ever known who's fallen into that criteria of wallowing in misery and doing nothing hasn't hit the threshold, they're just either entitled autists/spoilt children who think they're owed their own inner vision of life for no effort and think that mild pain is life-changing, or still stuck on thinking that generosity makes the world go round and treat their suffering like noble martyrdom that will be rewarded.
