I think the increase of sedentary lifestyles, the general level of stress and unhappiness of the working class and social media acceptance of fat, dysgenic looking people is way more of a factor than fruit stands dissappearing.

I think the fruit stand thing has a little bit of validity. There was a dedicated produce market in my California suburban town growing up that disappeared some time around the financial fuckery of the mid to late 2000s. They had better quality products than the grocery stores near it.
