1: kayfabe was still a thing back then

3: a lot more people thought wrestling was real because it didn't have the big choreographed spots we have these days
4: this was before all the wcw and ecw shit so it was easier to do a spot and have the crowd go crazy over it, since many of them would have never seen something like that before. as opposed to now where we see somebody go through a table every week

UWF isn't exactly easy to get into since it carries a smell of being "fake real" but if you put yourself in the mindset of the average NJPW fan in the mid 1980s it all falls into place - Maeda was seen as the successor to 70s Inoki and the antidote to all the schlocky crap that was infesting NJPW in the 80s. They wanted something "real" and he provided it (at least in the second UWF incarnation)

The style also doesn't appeal to the modern wrestling fan on face value because our brains are hotwired to require instant gratification and this just doesn't provide it, you have to sit down and pay attention to get anything from it. Especially in 1988 when they had a tiny roster and could only put on 3-4 matches a show - even the undercard matches would routinely go 30 minutes.
