You're right that it's not particularly considered cringe.
The people that go to shows are mostly normal, even if it's a niche thing.

No it isn't, Inoki is mainstream, a couple of boomer wrestlers like Tenryu and Chono are more known for variety shows and commercials than wrestling, and that's it.

rasslin is currently a lot more mainstream in the states than in japan. i can't comment on whether it's considered more or less cringe
