I don't think he was trying in 2001. He basically did the same shit Prince did and told Sony to fuck themselves and purposely made an expensive as fuck album and decided to not tour at all with it. But he still had a huge cache.
Around the second trial, eh. I think he truly did want to fuck off and live his life at this point, but that's where he started to run out of money. He got offered a ridiculous deal for 50 shows, and I think that's the moment he really started to chase relevancy. One last concert to show he's the GOAT. Even the most peak performer isn't going to do 50 straight fucking shows, and it's not like Michael stood still on stage either. It was a fucking insane idea.
