Those years I was completely sober did nothing special for me. I wasn't any more productive, any more socially active, any more ambitious than I was when I was smoking. The opposite, actually, because I was socializing less despite being in my prime and working all the time.
I don't think it really makes a difference one way or another but I suppose it varies from person to person.
