I don't think people really "Got" Bret either. Most guys actually took from Bret than they want to admit. A lot of the cheesy eighties shit was dying down by 91-92. There's a reason guys like Sid and Taker (while, cheesy, he was taken seriously and made it work) were getting pops on Hogan who had been doing the same shit since 84.
Bret wasn't the best promo, but over time he actually had some compelling shit. I liked his promos against Diesel and stuff. Bret was the serious guy in a world of shitty gimmicks which helped him stand out. He might have taken himself seriously, but it's funny how far guys went to fuck with him and how that means "HE took it too seriously" Meanwhile, Hogan would pick and choose when to show up on TV (usually after Football was done), Nash became the fucking booker. Bret just wanted shit to make sense. I don't think he ever took himself any more seriously than guys like Hogan, Flair and Nash did.
Flair in particular, deserves all the mockery he gets.
