The problem is Vince was the one that encouraged Bret to go to WCW because he couldn't pay for Bret's contract anymore, and when Bret mentioned not wanting to lose in Canada, Vince agreed verbally but then went behind his back. That's what made it a screwjob.

Vince probably had a story he wanted to tell and knowing Bret's contract lasts until a certain point made him confident in his ability to use him anyway he likes until then, including having him be a champ right until he walks out

yeah, it does seem throughout it all, Vince was just extremely stubborn and wanted to have his plan go through. He was the owner, so it was his right, and it wasn't as if Bret or Shawn made it easy either. But still, he could've been a bit more amicable or at least smarter about the situation.

Allegedly, the Hitman had "creative control" as per his contract. He had the ability to say no to things and he said no to this.

Vince technically breached Bret's contract when he did this but instead of pursuing legal action, Bret just punched him in the face, kek.
