I don't think they thought nXt would beat AEW (at least not consistently) but they thought NXT would prevent AEW from growing it's audience and well it succeeded in that.

yeah they thought the Khans would tap out when they realized there's no way to make money in the wrestling industry if you spend like AEW does. Just look at how quickly Vince pulled the plug on the XFL when they realised it was never going to make any money, they thought Shahid would do the same but here we are four years later and AEW has not made a single cent of profit in that entire time
