They can write off expenses to an extent. That's true. They shouldn't be allowed to, but they can. But aew is not the same as an NFL team and is run observably badly. It's not making any profit, it runs at a loss and that's been admitted by Tony himself.
However, interesting you brought this topic up. Did you know that WBD have spent 30m dollars on a Looney Toons movie and opted to shelve but the cost of releasing the movie (no cost) isnt worth the return on investment (guaranteed profit). They did the same last year with Batgirl. They have been allowed to submit the films as tax deductible so they got their money back (which is fucked up and shouldn't be legal), instead of releasing it because with the new rules they would have to share more of the profit with the people who actual made the films.
This is the company making an active loss with AEW for a higher cost.
It stands to reason that WBD will not want to renew something that is negative equity for them.
