That’s the funny thing about this ‘AEW using blood is bad for casuals’ argument. When I started watching wrestling the shit I liked were the hardcore matches and the gimmick matches. Seeing Bubba Ray take a cheese grater to Tommy Dreamers head at ECW One Night Stand was the coolest fucking thing in the world when I was 9. I legitimately stopped watching WWE in 2008 when they moved away from blood and violence.

ECW was a popular niche at the peak of modern wrestling popularity, and even then it didn't have a roster of 200 people and try to run at the same level as WWE in arenas with big staging and production while paying 7 figure contracts. The market for people who want to see cheese grater attacks on a regular basis during 5 hours of tv a week and PPV's almost every month is very, very small.

Because of a slew of new stars set up with hot angles for the first few years and taking on a new image that became a public trend, and having a big competitor to drive even more people into the market creating a hot night of tv and must-see shows.
