what was the appeal? A random tournament once a year and the winner just gets a special title that doesn't mean anything?

King of the Ring stopped being meaningful when it stopped being a one night tournament.
The whole point was supposed to be that you had to win 3 matches in a single night.
Once they started spreading it out over weeks, it was done.
