Some pagans thought it was a holy place for some reason, muslims adopted it, and then proceeded to meme it till current day as a place you need to go if you are in the muslim club. The building itself doesn't have real significance, it's been destroyed, rebuild and even stolen so many times it's original form and structure has been destroyed. It only serves as a landmark and now deemed the holiest of holy for the religion for some awful reason.
