It's fun to be in a relatively big, excited crowd. I'd pay $20 bucks for a concert by a semi-famous musical act if they blew through my small town without question. Most people don't even have that kind of disposable income budgeted, so it happens far, far less than it once did. The population drain from small town America is pretty obvious from census data. Just click around on Wikipedia for a while and you'll see that a lot.
