The other key factor is literally no one cared until the documentary gave them the excuse to pile on. They're no different than a medieval mob persecuting a witch.
Weak, spiteful shameful people with skeletons in their closet who attack approved targets to try and earn the protection of the establishment and mob because they know their own weakness and they know they can't defend themselves against either threats or vices. They think that by being the loudest dog in the pack it will save them when they're still ultimately pack runts and are only stalling for time until they're the next approved target of the mob. They deserve nothing but contempt, they're not moral or virtuous they're pack rats.
