Modern cartoons are in a weird spot. You have a bunch of people in the business who at least understand the truth that animation is one of the most versatile ways to work an angle in all of storytelling and that it's not just shit for babies, but when they get booked in an angle for TV-PG family friendly programming, they end up politicking their way into making it this obtuse emotionally stunted therapy session for both the booker and the mark where they'll just cut worked shoot promos talking about trauma and attempt to get over the queer gimmick which the network will never let them do with any degree of success anyways.
An artist looks at the world around them and interprets it into art. Most modern animators look at cartoons and interpret them into more cartoons. Animation is more embarrassing to be associated with than wrestling, trust me.

They weren't. Cartoons hit peak in the cable era that lead to the death of Saturday morning cartoons. It was like every channel collectively agreed that they couldn't beat SpongeBob reruns.

My favorite cartoons have been either early theatrical era or stuff that was greenlit by Mike Lazzo. He has an eye for good cartoons.

Television anime is suffering from the same problem of looking at anime to make more anime instead of the real world. Theatrical anime is still doing really well, even if it's a little stale, it's still top quality. TV anime is doing much better financially and in the zeitgeist across the board but you have that combined with the slave-like wages of working in anime, so the quality comes at a cost, even when the quality isn't great. Just like wrestling, America sucks dick, Japan's doing much better, warts and all, but we're never gonna get it as good as we had it in the 90's.

Not really, they won the rights but another company would have taken Pokémon and probably done better with it. 4kids had Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh and dropped them to start their own shit and failed miserably without the huge and undeniable mega IPs to rely on

Hell yeah. I used to watch Saturday morning cartoons and then Smackdown, which aired here on Saturday at 11am. It was such a dimes set up. I got Sailor Moon, Pokémon, Flint the Time Detective, Zoids and The Big Show.
It's a shame that no one has tried to revamp that formula via steaming. Like imagine a TV network using twitch and a big steamer to do Saturday cartoon blocks. They would print dimes.

Animation TV is such an open and flexible format for playing with ideas, but somehow everyone is getting worse at it. The big successes of recent years are all complete trash made by pseudo intellectual narcissists (Rick and Morty) or brain-dead template shit like fucking Paw Patrol. I'd be a fucking moron growing up with this trash. I learned so many perspectives and ideas from the experimental cartoons of the 90s.

Kinda true but all the zoomer anime fad guys love one piece now, that could have been happening 20 years ago off the back of Dragon Ball and Pokémon. Like there are a lot of huge YouTube geeks who only make one piece videos about how the anime is better than the manga. The anime is trash most of the time, but most idiots will watch any trash if it's popular. Or even to fit in. Like, for example, WWE and aew are both absolute shit but people watch them too, obsessively. One Piece would have been a pretty big deal with a good localisation.

I'm not autistic so I'm not going to check, but I would wager that one piece has made a far higher profit as an IP than TMNT has in the past 20 years. Despite One Piece being mostly restricted to Japan, it's huge in France, Spain, Korea, South America etc. TMNT hasn't been in any way relevant in almost 30 years.
