That's not just a wrestling issue. "Nerd culture" has deemed references and callbacks the pinnacle of entertainment. Easter Eggs are more important than anything else. Anything that makes them feel smart because they recognize something will make them clap like seals. It's why they love all of AEW's inside baseball bullshit and promos and spots that reference ROH feuds (that they only know because a tweet or a YouTube video spelled it out for them because they didn't really watch any of that) or anytime they dunk on WWE.
