I think it comes down two factors. First wrestling is just dog shit now. No one has proper training and there’s no way for the majority of talent to get experience.
And the second is that what’s done is done. You can’t change how he was booked 15 years ago. I’m going through the same thing with TNA, I hated how they squandered all their talent but now that I know how it all played out (I was right) I can appreciate them for what they were. Heck some of my favorite Raven matches are from TNA, and I think Sabu did the best work of his career there.

When you watched his matches and didn't like him it's like he was a heel that worked you, you wanted him to lose and that made you invested in the match
Also he was a professional, a great promo and consistent in the ring, he earned the title big match John

Same reason why alot of people like Roman now. He doesn't win clean all the time so in a way you got worked into hating him by dodgy booking.
It's something marks/smarks fall for alot because they think an undeserved win is the worst thing possible, in reality it's just a fake win for a fake fight so don't take it too seriously.
