Cody was not a draw in AEW, everyone wanted his shitty segments to end by the time he left. I'd argue he's not really a draw in WWE, the brand is the draw, and it's got a big part hitched to him. It would be interesting to see if he could get people to watch AEW if he jumped back over.

Punk isn't really contentious either but you can at least argue he wasn't worth the money he was bringing in for the issues he was causing but Cody was just weird television that also drew dimes.

Yes, he was. Again, he was a perennial top 10 merch seller, always gained ratings when he showed up, there's no argument to be made against him being a draw in aew. His segments were ass because he was schizophrenically trying to book himself as 50 different things but he was a draw.

The same episode I mentioned MJF, Sting and Darby Allin did 913,000 viewers and 423,000 in 18-49, Cody and Andrade did did 851,000 viewers and 398,000 in 18-49.

Punk-MJF didn't tank ratings, btw. They grew every quarter to being about equal with Q2 of that ep, but it did underperform for their first ever match

Even if Punk did well back then, too many fans held a grudge against him when he came back for him to be a draw.

His schtick in WWE and AEW is completely different because in WWE he is being effectively tard-handled.

Cody was using AEW as a springboard back to the big leagues, and executed it perfectly.
Punk thought he was sticking it to WWE and it couldn't have gone worse. He ended up wanting to stick it to AEW even more, so has gone back just to spite and bury Tony. Needless to say it'll almost certainly end in tears.

Cody drew jack shit in AEW. It was more of a loss on the optics/backstage side than business side for AEW. Punk did draw but returns were diminishing and Collision numbers were dropping with him on.

AEW just needs to find something exciting (not a bunch of Devil gimps running around), push the adult side of their product and learn how to create long lasting stars. If they fuck up Ospreay then really there's no hope.

If Darby survives Everest, it could draw some mainstream press. He has unironic crossover appeal, and could draw in a lot of new fans. He's gotten a lot better at promos, but I still think he should stick mostly to his kino vignettes.

Jay let MJF walk all over him in the eyes of a lot of people by not trying to get his own dig in at Max. He'll figure it out and has been pretty fine overall since then, imo, but he needs to finish connecting the pieces for how to convey that character in an American weekly TV setting.
