The average casual isn't gonna go into it that much, admittedly the average casual hasn't heard of AEW but if they go "wtf cm punk thought he was dead lol" and look up what he's been doing and read "he and his friend got suspended for beating up 3 other wrestlers at once with agents and legal there, then when he came back he beat up another wrestler and his boss" they're not gonna think about who those jobbers are just "huh guess he got a clue since UFC"

His backstage fights have unironically done more to rehab his legitimacy than anything onscreen could

Did he though? Any person in that locker room and in this board would've stepped into that octagon for the millions of dollars he got paid. The reason why I don't have much respect for it is because everyone went about it the wrong way. I would've had respect had punk worked his way up through smaller mma companies and earned his way into the ufc. No one believes he deserved to be there. Even Dana white scouted easy opponents or jobbers for Phil's fights, in order to not embarrass him in that publicity stunt. It's like bringing Shaq into the wwe for a match at Summerslam against the Brooklyn Brawler and Shaq getting pinned.
