I haven't followed New Japan much this year but this is the first I've heard of him since then, what happened? How do you go from instant title shot on returning to not getting it even when he's recovered (you'd think him vs Hiromu would have been an easy title match to sell) to having a Chase Owens/Yujiro Takahashi-tier tournament run?

This. As well as RoH at the time when RoH was still a thing. He went from being relevant in NJPW to being "some asian guy" in NXT forever. He should have had it in his contract that he'd at least make it to the main roster. Such a waste and I say this as someone that likes Kushida.

The guy bounced on Hustle because he wanted to be taken seriously, despite some of the biggest names in Japanese wrestling working goofy storylines because it was a good promotion that made all the goofy stuff fun instead of off-putting.
Same reason he bounced on NJPW. He wanted to be taken seriously as a wrestler and not some juniors guy with a movie character gimmick.

Boy did he fuck up when signed with WWE. I don't know how he looked at what happened to lil K and decided,
