Look at the absolute state of the WWE in late 1996 early 1997.
You had Undertaker, Michaels had the belt and sucked ass with it and had the worst run since Diesel (a tall order), Bret was gone to do a TV show for a lot of 1996 and made his return, and Austin was only starting to get over.
Then look at Sid. He's huge, he's tall, his promos are crazy, he's safe (meaning others will happily bump for him which gets him over even more), and he was booked as a monster heel in the main event picture.
Wrestlers talk shit about Sid in shoots because Sid never sold himself out for the business the way they did. Sid was in wrestling for the Sid business.
If he could go play softball with his kids instead of doing a PPV, he would. And he did.
They fucked with Flair for when he spent time with his kids in WCW. They couldn't fuck with Sid.
Sid was unfuckwithable. He carried himself that way and everyone could see it.
Oh yeah and his "psycho" promos were actually really well verbed and inundated with class. The only thing psychotic was the way he said things.
