The sad thing is Cena did all this to prove a point. That you can do all the cool smark approved moves, better than anyone today, and still engage with the crowd on an emotional level.
Most workers learned the wrong lesson. Now there's a whole promotion of guys who think all you need to do is the smark approved moves.

People kept saying he sucked at wrestling for years because he did.
So then they gave him a midcard title run where he worked with some of the best workhorses on the roster carrying the shit out of Cena to the best matches of his career while he pulled out shitty Code Reds.
They had him go over the entire midcard before finally losing the belt clean to Del Rio.

All things considered, he should’ve lost the belt the first time he went up against KO.

People always bad faith Cena's ability and execution but all their favorites are so much worse.

Cena had better matches with Khali than he did with Owens. It was the difference between a useless piece of shit knowing he needed to be carried in Khali, and an out of shape indie wrestler wanting a say in his matches.
Those matches would have been a complete mess like everything Owens did on the indies, had Cena not grounded him and kept the match structured.

Cena's open challenge was the first time in over a decade and the last time the US title felt relevant and fun. Having a big name vet bury the roster and bring some prestige to the title I think is fine to do once, I don't think it should've dropped to KO but it was defs wasted on Del Rio.
