But honestly the only reason I ever figured Okada would go is to do a year or two in the states with his gaijin buddies before settling down to be a family man and returning to New Japan.

I wonder about that last bit.

I gotta wonder if Nakamura feels a little passed over. Real NJPW fans will remember that it was Nakamura, not Tanahashi, who was initially NJPW's golden boy of his generation. He was the one who got the big push first, the one who received more direct attention/mentorship from Inoki.

Maybe Nakamura never even conceived of this being possible. Maybe he would've never left if he had known that he could've possibly been chosen as company president one day.

ofcourse he knew it was a possibility it's happened before when wrestlers get given high level executive leadership positions, but he made his choice to go to America so he would have known he wasn't in the running, I'm sure he's happy with his choice he got paid a shitheap to work a less physically tolling style for his final years, and I'm sure once his in ring career ends if he wants it I'm sure they can find him a backstage position back in NJPW

Tanahashi isn't the ace anymore either and hasn't been in nearly a decade. Okada was Tanahashi's successor and yet he was Nakamura's sort-of-underling.

Nakamura ain't really passed over. When he returns to join his Ace BROTHER, he'll be given the king's return.

doesn't matter that nakamura was given everything, tanahashi was always credited for being the one to save and rebuild njpw. there's not one person in the japanese wrestling industry more respected than the ace, making him the perfect pick for company president.
