How did Rob Van Dam end up so popular so fast? The guy spent his whole career in ECW and then the second he shows up in WWF everyone loves him and he’s having matches with Undertaker and Steve Austin. Was flippy weed man that much of a killer gimmick?

For as small as ECW was compared to WWF and ECW, it was still the number 3 promotion during a wrestling boom. It wasn't uncommon for dudes to get together and listening to the new Korn album while playing a bootleg ECW tape.
Also, much like AEW fans popping for Okada, people like to pretend they know more about wrestling than they actually do. This is the only website where people brag about how ignorant they are. Among normal wrestling fans, people like to act like they have encyclopedic knowledge of wrestling. RVD was the ECW guy, and even if he hadn't seen him before ECW was cool and so he was cool.

See back then fans liked the wrestling and didn't obsess about ratings and even if it was wwe vs wcw both liked ecw. Fans of this era are pathetic and will always try to recreate that era but they never will.
