Why would they put Goldberg in a slow match with Bret? That's a horrible idea. Goldberg should have never had anything other than squash matches or a big match with Hogan.

Because Goldberg had been around for like 3 or so years at this point. The 5 minute spear + jackhammer squash matches were overplayed and boring as fuck well before this match was ever booked. With the right opponent Goldberg could be carried into a half decent match (DDP).
