Look, this Continental Cancer Classic shit is exactly what Tony meant by "sports-based".
He didn't mean "let's do 80s studio wrestling in arenas with big crowds", or "let's book matches where guys work in the ring and figure out what to do when they're there no sooner".
Tony meant "let's do pyramids and triangles and big fucking squares YEAH I LOVE SQUARES WOO SQUARED CIRCLE WITH CIRCULAR BOOKING AAAAAA THIS IS SO GOOD".

It was never Tony's ambition to do JCP/WCW Mk.II.
He wanted to do Premier League Football schemes, NFL points systems, he wanted to take the geekiest most irrelevant bit of all sports entertainment promotions and make that the focal point of AEW.
That is ultimately why it will fail. People don't give a shit about round robin tournaments, they wanna see their own team win and win so fucking hard that they become the champ.
And the wrestling audience is no different. They wanna see their guy win, the end.
It's just the fans who get their semi nursed by the idea of advanced intricate storylines and hardcore soap opera plots, and they, we, are in a minority.

This is literally what they were doing in their highest rated period. Sure there was some hoaky shit thrown in but nowhere near as much.

You can trace the decline in AEWs quality to 3 key factors
>Getting rid of the rankings
It was the only thing that got Tony to sit down and work out a long term plan for people
>Getting rid of the tunnels in favour of a massive LED screen
It made it look like discount WWE
>Hiring Mansury
All of a sudden the entire production had a Diet Coke WWE feel

AEW declined from its peak because the world title scene went to shit. Punk injuries, Mox interim, MJF's reign starting out like it was just any random MJF feud and then after an underwhelming pillars feud, degrading completely into comedy. Which would have been fine if it was short and sweet, but it wasn't. AEW is lacking the big fight feel at the top that it had when it was booming.

They have it with Christian's TNT run but it's fucking bizarre to have what is essentially treated like the Cruiserweight belt being the biggest angle on the show. Some people just have 'it' though and Christian is one of them.

I just booked 2 WM programmes for you.
That's what Vince did in the Attitude Era. The hero must win eventually, or the crowd loses interest.
This is why so many guys in AEW fail to get over.
You can get yourself over in one loss, but if every fucking match the people see you in is a clean loss, they won't care about you.
But if it's a dirty loss, they might just start to sympathise.
And if you have a consistent villain who cheats all the time, you give the people a target to hate, and a reason to cheer for the... ah yeah, the babyface.
What I'm describing here is fundamental pro wrestling. Tony doesn't book any of this.

Tony Khan thinks that he can apply the nationalistic and hyper-regional loyalty and passion for "my own people" that you find in association football, to pro wrestling.
He genuinely believes that these nameless dimeless poorly-booked wrestlers can get the same support without waving a regional flag or something like that.
Doesn't work that way.

Yeah that's why I specified at the top. We've had The TNT and International titles feel bigger than the main belt, that's not a good thing to have happen. They should all have a degree of big match feel, but the world title should stand above the others.

Besides, WWE wrestlers have storylines that get them over.
The round-robin tournament has no story.
King of the Ring was where midcard stories concluded, and sometimes got extended, and KotR was generally poorly received for being devoid of hype and heat despite that build.
Tony's tournament has nothing but points. Do you really believe that the audience will go "this guy has 7 points, therefore he must be likeable"?

since cody is gone the presentation/big feel is missing. Also, AEW builds up these epic moments like Hangman Drunk Cowboy, MJF heel Title win and totally drops the ball afterwards. Except for the build up, they fucked up every major title reign.

Nah, I think Kenny's reign had that feeling of a big match every PPV. Hangman had a good start with the Danielson series and Lance and then we entered the Punk-centric universe where Page was forever feuding with Cole.

Even OSW Review, who are quite literally paid by Tony to give positive press, have of late been griping about AEW booking endless "good matches" with no build, story or reason to care, how they don't watch wrestling to just see moves, and how if every single match is an epic 5 star classic like the FTR/BCGold Collision tag, then PPVs become meaningless as a 5 star PPV match is just ordinary now and an okay PPV match is now bad.

Tony genuinly is too autistic to understand that not everyone loves West Coast hipster irony and OMG THEY DID COOL FLIPS exhibition wrestling like he does, and will hide behind the approval of 200 California hipsters on Cagematch until AEW sinks into irrelevance.
