Remember that MJF buried him for not working out, said he had lost his touch, and basically was over the hill and didn't put in any effort anymore. He was the "Panama Playboy" no longer, all of that stuff.
Also, Cole could blame him for his injuries in kayfabe, as they were suffered "defending him".
Plenty of reasons for Adam Cole to hate MJF in kayfabe.
I just think both of the guys involved are not right for the feud. MJF's babyface run has been a mistake and Cole shouldn't be off somewhere shining shoes or some shit, he doesn't belong in the wrestling business. He looks like Darby Allin but tries to wrestle like he's Kazuchika Okada. He doesn't acknowledge his lack of size, he doesn't wrestle like an underdog -- he fucking SUCKS.
