Around the time he wrestled Shingo Takagi in Philly that summer he was followed into the locker room by a deranged, gay black male fan and briefly forced into a sexual encounter. Eventually the other boys in the locker room caught the act and teamed up to pull the assailant off of Bryan. One of those saviors was a young Jon Moxley, which is why he and Bryan are now friends and close locker room allies.
A lot of people assume Darren Young/Fred Rosser was the rapist due to his being gay, black and in the Nexus at the time but it was just a crazy fan on the indies. The resulting trauma and recent proliferation of gay black men on the indie scene is the real reason why Bryan hasn't taken any indie bookings since leaving WWE, despite expressing some interest in showing up at his hometown indie DEFY.
