Most money and public power is an illusion, wealth tied up in assets which can be tanked by the markets they control, fame or status thats compromised and fragile. There's a reason people say how the real elite's names aren't known, if I was a sociopath who was in the club, I wouldn't want to be publicly rich. I'd want to be the comfy, overlooked local businessman/upper middle salaryman who always gets a favour. Draws far less heat.
