This was honestly a great night for SANADA and a step forward for him and if you think otherwise, you're bananas. One of the best cases of protecting/enhancing a guy in a loss I've ever seen, made all of the HoT heat worth it.

Still don't know how this happened so fast, Akira seemed to do some sort of kick on the exposed turnbuckle but the camera didn't catch the whole thing. I feel like last year gives good reason to be hesitant on any gaijin's future. how are you guys feeling about commentary? I like Chris and Rocky, Walker I'm not as sold on. nice voice, but I don't buy anything he says. it never seems like it's coming from genuine insight or experience, more like he's just saying the sort of stuff he's already heard other people say. it's fake as fuck. he's way better, but it kinda reminds me of Excalibur in that sense.

Take New Year's Dash for instance. Even in Japanese, you can really only pull up the logo with no dates or wrestler photos on the poster. I'm not in Japan so I don't know for sure, but I really can't believe that they didn't put posters up for the show around the building or something.

I watched WK18 and NYD, both were my first ever NJPW events. I've really enjoyed both! Definitely interesting catching all the cultural differences with the crowd and the stylistic choices for post-match interviews and such. It seems I came in at a cool time too, since I guess the upcoming cage match is the first ever for the company in front of an audience? Wild!

Anyway, hope I'm welcome here as an outsider slowly stepping into this world.

The match itself was good, fell apart a little when SANADA got hurt but that final stretch was amazing.
Mixture of the heat of the crowd and utter kino storytelling. NJPW still provides the goods.

I feel like the promotion and Japanese wrestling in general has that perfect balance of storytelling and in-ring action, they flow seamlessly with one another in comparison to WWE (more emphasis on stories/characters resulting in a weaker in-ring product) and AEW (focusing primarily on a constant stream of high-quality* while neglecting storytelling and consistency).

I like him. He’s a neutral, serious base for the color commentators to play off. Kevin would often get way too gimmicky, doing shoutouts to micro e-celebs, cracking dumb jokes.

I appreciate going in on a newer guy but I don't care for his generic shtick. Also how clearly he's talking out of his ass trying to fill air and hype things up, he sounds clued sometimes and it's cringe. Honestly commentary isn't that big a deal for me anyways, I'm fine with just leaving Japanese on, it's helpful when you're brand new to hear Charles give details on stuff but afterwards whatever.

Same. Japanese wrestling has a nice mixture of the two things important to matches. Helps that a promotion like NJPW features so many different acts, all have their own various styles and clash ups. Despy, ZSJ, Yano, Okada, all wrestle different from each other and you can feel it in their matches. It's a variety show. Different flavors from the top to bottom of the card.

I think the key is that NJPW does angles and feuds but not storylines. By that I mean that action and motivations are never rooted in anything apart from the fact that everyone ultimately wants to be the best which means the belts. They do not have anything get too out there like we're used to here in the States.

Wrestling is considerably smaller in Japan than in America, yes.
A very busy industry with companies all over the country.
But Japan's Wrestlemania equivalent does less than 30k people. And even in its Attitude Era equivalent, it only did 65k.

Coming off American wrestling I felt similar, then I realized "wait, these guys who are pro wrestlers are wrestling in proper university/prefectural gyms and sumo halls, that makes sense". Wrestling in empty arenas like AEW is cringe and I don't expect anyone to pack in WWE numbers (CMLL seems to do pretty well though).

Also when it comes to places like Korakuen Hall it's so fucking awesome seeing normal looking people including families just cheering and having a blast in an intimate setting. There's more crowd interaction/venturing in general in NJPW too. Basically, you get high end production but soulful settings and wrestling.

Just watched WK18 after several years of not really keeping up to date with NJPW and wrestling in general and watching it made me remember how New Japan made me fall in love with wrestling all over again. I tried getting back into wrestling by watching WWE and AEW here and there and I hated almost everything and I was thinking maybe I've just grown out of wrestling but nope, that shit just sucks in comparison.
