how did people at the time react to this? the crowd goes crazy for it but its regarded as one of the worst booking decisions in history, was it just the crowd being happy to see yokozuna lose? they don't seem to care as much for hogan after

Wrestlemania crowds are always mark crowds. Hogan is a big enough star that he could have interrupted the match before it started, took a shit on the mat, and then stole the title before they could even fight for it. The fans in attendance still would have cheered.

Its both. Hogan was still over and the crowd popped for the Hulkster, but giving him the title when he was already checked out and looking to leave was retarded. It maybe might've worked if Hogan agreed to put Bret over in the end but instead it really stalled out.

Sorta unrelated but the biggest fuckup of that early to mid 90's WWF was Vince thinking Macho Man was too old to have the title. He really could've helped transition into the new gen era if Vince wasn't weird about age at the time.

i remember watching this as it happened and had no idea what was going on. hogan came out and randomly challenged the new champ for the title. new champ said yes and loses immediately. the whole thing happened in like 5 minutes and just seemed awkward and strange

It's bad booking because it wasn't advertised. You want to put the belt on the Hulkster because Bret isn't over than alright but not a single person paid to see Hogan beat Yoko because it wasn't on the card.
