AEW is self mark city. Everyone is a selfindulgent idiot who has to get their shit in & is given free rein by Tony to do whatever vanity bullshit they want even if it buries them. It's why Mox has become a shitter, Kingston is sloppy & will never be what he could be, MJF repetitive as a heel awful as a face, Dax more toxic than ever, Miro a selfmark gamer cuck, Malakai a narm-fuelled edgy selfmark, Hangman refusing to learn from bigger better names of the past, the Bucks whole act, etc. Its even in the commentary Excalibur's a self important prissy little try hard shit who undercuts JR for griping at how so much means nothing now, he's only tolerable when Taz is next to him taking the piss out of everything because he also has no expectations set of him.
Tony wants 3 things:

Guys like Bryan (or Claudio) who are ultra professional & just enjoy wrestling too much to ever be a self mark, get ruined by this because they're not the type to politic for themselves & Tony has no need/interest in making money so doesn't need to push Bryan to make money. He thinks it's like EWR where Bryan's great stats mean a few random good matches & "To put himself over" promos will suddenly launch Bryan back to the top Overness score, so he can just feed his Overness to get midcarders over in the meantime.
Bringing a midcarder over & instantly making him a top guy KWABs your company, bringing a top guy & putting him midcard doesnt make you look big it looks like you got him after hes past his best. Bryan was a huge get he main evented Mania the same year he joined AEW. And has been booked as a gatekeeper to the upper midcard instead of winning the title while he was hot and relevant.
