Why would you have your hottest face turn heel in his hometown?
Vince won the war and promptly began making moves to turn the company into what he wanted since he didn’t have to listen to fans or worry about competition anymore. Austin was never the plan, just the best answer against a rival company at the time. he’s not Italian so he was never meant to be the face.

This was the iceberg. What really killed the company was the piss poor handling of the invasion. 2001-2002 alienated a shitton of fans who were also invested in WCW stars.

Heel Austin made sense from a storyline and company perspective because the Attitude era was over and the company needed to move in a new direction, and austin didn't have any opponents. It didn't really work though, because he was still getting cheered for no other reason than because he's stone cold.

They fucked it up. On paper heel Austin is fine. The problem was after like 2 weeks they had Austin playing to the crowd again.

Some other anon said wwe and Austin were already cooling off a d they were 100% right. By that point Austin had already done everything with his character. There was no other place new to go besides heel.

Oh I wouldn't argue that at all with what you're saying about Vince. And that was their own downfall. They could've had a fucking stacked dream roster even for the Attitude Era but instead they made 90% of everyone who came from either ECW or WCW look like nothing

Booker and RVD got over almost by accident, and fells like vince just didn't know what to do with his now bloated roster. Even former guys like Hall and Nash failed to do anything worth while. Hogan, RVD, and Booker T were the only guys worth a shit post invasion.

Because thinking Austin shoot hated Vince was the last thing real to me in wrestling when I was 16. You have to also remember that Austin was gone for 11 months in the prior year and everyone had been biding their time for his return. We didn't want heel stone cold, face stone cold had been gone long enough prior.

They were an excellent tagteam, and Austin was an excellent heel.

It didn't matter. Nobody wanted to see it. It'd be like turning Spider-Man heel. And they had ample warning no-one wanted to see it, because Austin was getting better reactions than The Rock every week of their program.

It wasn't the only thing that killed the boom, but it certainly did the most damage.

This was part of it, but the big killer was that Vince didn't wanna buy out the top talents contracts. Because he's cheap, and he knew if he put in all that money, which he eadily could've afforded, into the WCW guys contracts, he'd have to fo the same for everyone at WWE.

He could've afforded that, too. He just didn't want to.

No one has ever claimed this, but it did contribute to WWF's popularity decline because Austin had just returned a few months prior and weren't tired of his Anti-corporate rebel face persona just yet. I think if they did the turned a lot later. Maybe around 2002 it would've worked. 2001 wasn't the time, especially with The Rock leaving to go make the Mummy Returns which leaves WWF without a top face. The carder (face) vs Austin (heel) angle was atrocious.
