Really, it was because of Billy's loyalty to Tyrus. He worked with Tyrus for years in TNA and asked him to come back to wrestling when he bought NWA. Yeah, it was a shit run, but Aldis left and Cardona was hurt. Billy wanted to give his friend a moment at the top.
Cardona did get a good match out of Tyrus at the PPV right before this, so I'm not even sure why the EC3 match was so bad.
