>>12937665I wouldn't say anything went "wrong". I think, at first, there was the novelty of having a WWE alternative. Even I watched it in the beginning. However, I don't think their format resonates with American fans. If I had never watched wrestling, I can't say I would be interested in the match-based focus of the show. That works in Japan but I don't think it works as well here. I started to lose interest. I have two friends who are heavy into NJPW and they lose it because a match based promotion is what they really enjoy. Cool. It also doesn't help that WWE is better than it has been in a long time. WWE's issue was never that it was story driven, it's that the more recent stories under Vince were bad. He would rip up scripts and write the show on the air. HHH seems to let his writers do their job and it shows.
If you enjoy a match focused show that is built around "dream matches" AEW will appeal to you. If you enjoy a more story driven show that uses wrestling as a means to tell a story, then WWE will appeal to you. Neither is right or wrong.
tl;dr: The novelty of being a WWE alternative wore off. Match based programming doesn't work as well in the States. WWE fixed a lot of it's writing issues under HHH.
