Very very close but I'd go with post-injury Shawn personally. Pre-injury Shawn was a lot more explosive and athletic but post-injury Shawn compensated for his slower pace by using more psychology in his matches. Plus post-injury Shawn cut the best heel promo of all time so he wins.
That's why Michaels is the Michaels though, all versions of him are Michaels.

Post injury Michael's is probably one of the best performers of all time. He had a fucking aura about him that every match he had was going to be fucking good and it almost always delivered.

I still remember hearing he'd fight Taker at Mania and lost my shit

Pre, he was more compelling as a character plus also had great matches. Post I would say the matches were even better but the character was very watered down, although we did get a brief glimpse of the old HBK in 2005 vs Hogan. That Montreal promo is an all timer.

This is my headcannon, but I think he didn't want to do shit usual heel shtick after become a born again christian, so he only went for heelish/tweener persona when working as the bad guy after his return from injury. Also his work after coming back is dimes, he started doing business for the sake of business rather than to elevate himself, and he had his best matches during this period.

Pre-Michaels was the peak wrestler of all time next to Flair, imo. He had everything - insane charisma, looks, promo, wrestling ability. Post-return he was still a great wrestler, but his athleticism was seriously diminished, his looks were completely gone, charisma was meh and he barely cut any promos. He did have that memorable Montreal and Hogan ones, but that's about it. And he was completely tame and lame PG for the entirety of his run. There's no contest

I don't think there is a more overrated run than Shawn in the 90s. Even if he's the most talented wrestler ever, it doesn't matter when all of his performances resemble that of a drug addicted diva whose only being pushed cause he lets the boss fuck him. At least when he came back in the 2000s he had Cena to carry his worthless ass.

He did have a minor disfiguring accident when he took a bad boot to the eye from Kane in 03 or 04 or something. Then you throw in the drugs; even after he got clean they had taken their toll.
Bottom line is, my nigga Shawn went from HBK to r9k pretty quickly after he came back.
