Hi /pw/ I just recently become interested in wrestling game. I fondly remember playing the PS2 smackdown games but I think I dropped the wrestling game around Raw vs. Smackdown 2007. What is the best game to buy and get back into, should I wait for 2K24, 2K23, or AEW?

I want some modability to create meme characters or download wrestlers from other promotion, and preferably decent gameplay and graphics

I heard that WWE is clamping down on modability in 2K23. Is this resolved? Can people just crack the game and bypass DRM?

People really oversell what the mods in 2k can do - like, the create features in the game are great, and the roster has 200 characters. By no standard is the problem with the WWE 2K series that there aren't enough people or arenas or shit like that.

The best mods are probably intergender stuff and stupid match types that may or may not crash the game, not 2021 ricochet attires or an AEW guy that looks a whole 5% better than the best caw of him on the servers

Community creations don't include entrance themes and titantron videos unlike mods.

What you can do

You cant do the insane cartoonish shit anymore. It all comes off looking like a youtube kids clickbait video whenever i see a thumbnail for it. Cringey as fuck. But the old games no longer draw bc their gameplay is boring to watch.

I'm clueless about game development but these sports games seem incredibly more difficult to mod than most, maybe it's an engine thing? I feel you'd see a lot more mods for NFL and FIFA games if it was easily accessible.

You don't even really need to "mod" 2k23 to add custom entrance music. You just replace audio files of themes already in the game with the themes you want, and then assign that to a wrestler.

So for example if you have a Kobashi CAW, you would replace like "Hero 4" or something with Grand Sword and then just give the caw Hero 4.
I'm sure you'll still be able to do this in 2k24 even if they do crack down on modding because really, it's just a matter of converting an mp3 to the audio format used by the game and then renaming a file.

There are total conversions of the N64 AKI games in various themes.
There are texture replacement and translation mods for old Japanese wrestling PS2 games like King of Colosseum 2, pic related.

Fire Pro World is probably the most moddable of all and has an extensive modsuite, the Carlzilla pack, that is used by pretty much everyone if you're into simming.
