How popular was WCW at its peak in the late 90s? Did Goldberg or DDP have household name recognition like Stone Cold?

WCW was not over in Canada at all. Even when Bret showed up. I knew more people watching ECW on TNN at 8 than Nitro on TSN, and I was in college in 2000.

Honest to god the NWO was over as fuck because the "faces" on the WCW were just as often represented by fat old balding larry zybisco a coked up barely mobile automaton that was programmed to wrestle one match called Lugar and someone fans legit liked watching in a Sting or DDP. The cool bad guys seemed to get screwed by the system because they had control over their booking and knew how to manipulate the hillbillies running the place into thinking Nash would get booed for power bombing people after they banned it. They were fucking over everywhere all over the country even if it was just to see an evil Hulk Hogan since the rest of the show was cool enough to keep peoples interest

Sting DDP the Steiners and Logar were the only guys put up on their level but it was hard to root for guys that got beat and outwitted for 3 years. Crazy enough the fans fucking loved Jericho Eddy Ray and everyone in Ravens Flock but both the NWO and the hillbilly execs refused to use them for anything but midcard fodder Goldberg was a nice midcard act until they botched Sting beating Hogan and he became the one fans pinned all their hope on after that. This lasted until the finger poke returned you to 1996 (watered down) and people would just rather watch WWF

Goldberg had one good year as WCW had already slipped behind WWF. DDP was big when people were still watching and his matches with Macho Man were one of the few times an NWO story actually had a match people cared about
