Journalists shouldn't be rewarded for bad behavior. If they want to waste their time running against a brick wall, they can go nuts. If Twitter accounts want to weep and gnash their teeth, let them. It changes nothing. If Paul was on the hot seat, either he doesn't show up to the press conference or he answers like you said.
