I wasn't around then so I've been looking this up a bit. Apparently there was controversy in 2019 because Harold kept Chono off commentary for the g1 finals. Chono supposedly did a shoot promo on air or something that might have been the reasoning behind this but I can't find the info, what did he say exactly?

Speaking of gaijin, how did Baba handle their booking and pushes so much better than NJPW has? Hansen, Gordy, Brody, the Destroyer, the Funks, and Dr. Death were all wicked over in Japan, but never at the expense of the locals.
I'd argue that Baba was able to utilize them so successfully because he positioned them in a separate power structure. If a local loses to Hansen, it doesn't make him look bad, after all Hansen is big, bad, unstoppable, American force of nature. It was never a fair fight to begin with. But if a local beats Hansen, then he looks good. He overcame impossible odds thanks to his skill, training, and fighting spirit. He has proved himself by conquering the force of nature.

Wrestling is just not popular enough right now. An AJPW + NJPW + NOAH + Stardom + TJPW + Indies + every single overseas worker in the WWE and AEW returning card probably wouldn't sell out. Even if you had an impossible time-traveling dream-card with Inoki vs. Baba, Kawada vs. Misawa, etc. I still don't think it would sell out.

Are there any good English language resources on the history of NJPW's storylines? I know puro has never been as storyline or angle-heavy as western wrestling, but I want to dive deeper into Inoki and the three musketeers and I would appreciate having a bit more context for their work than looking at matches and going "hey, Muta vs Chono should be good." There's a handful of channels that put out good videos on AJPW/NOAH history, but I've found very little of quality on pre-Tana New Japan.

The real problem is that NJPW or more directly, the TV studios that own most of their footage, will do takedowns on everything on Youtube if you even use short clips.
You can sort of get career retrospectives in AMV/clip channels like purowave but they're stylized and have music and like a VHS overlay. And even he has to hide his entire playlist for fear of copyright strikes, but that's basically all I've got. He did a nice multi part Mutoh retrospective when he retired

The lesson here is that trying to make Youtube videos about Japanese wrestling is suffering. And they don't even realize how much interest and business they're denying themselves by doing this. I'm part way through Ibushi vs. Tanahashi at G1 2018, and it's becoming clear what rubbed me the wrong way about Ibushi vs. Naito wasn't Naito, it was Ibushi. Ibushi's baby-face-in-peril shtick worked when he fought Jay, because Jay and Gedo were clearly dirty cheating heels, and he was clearly the babyface. When he's up against guys who aren't bullying heels (Tanahashi, Naito) it falls apart. Instead of looking like David struggling to take down Goliath, he comes across like a Soccer player going into theatrics to try to get the other guy a yellow card. Maybe it's just me though.
