CoD was entering it's fatigue state (It's since regained traction) and at the same time, fans were clamoring for a WWII entry again, with a return to more basics. People mocked Advanced Warfare for having a bunch of sci-fi shit in it. Then Infiinte Warfare dropped and everyone memed on it as CoD in space. Eventually CoD WWII dropped and sucked shit anyway.
CoD, and every other FPS on the market then pretty much kept all the shit people were bitching about, and ended up doing fine as battle royales became the new hotness.
