I'm just wondering if part of their motivation was Punk's injury. Like, if they were gonna have him go against Seff. In which case, I'd be very pissed, since Gunther would be perfect to dethrone him. Do a Hulk/Warrior angle, and it'd be a monster push for Gunther. Coming off a record-breaking reign without even being beaten for the belt.

All fans are internet fans in 2024. Raw is literally moving to Netflix. It's not that deep. They're just going in a direction that isn't popular. Punk was clearly meant to win the Rumble to start with but they called an audible once he got hurt. Now Cody takes his spot and Roman and Rock goes on like they clearly intended from the start

I don't get why people think current year-plus champion Gunther beating another nearly-year long champion Rollins would be a good move. Once Gunter loses that belt he needs to stay away from titles for a decent while. He's not too distant from Roman in his reign being tiresomely long

I don't agree with that because Gunther wrestles much more frequently, and every Gunther match is fantastic, even against guys who aren't as technically skilled. He's a perfect Intercontinental Champion.

I'll give you every point there because you're completely correct in that regard. His reign has been far more enjoyable than Roman's as far as those things go. My point to better phrase it is that after a lengthy title run like the one he's currently on it should be given a bit of breathing room to stand as its own thing before he jumps into another and it all just blends together. I feel like people could sour on him otherwise. Not that I want to keep bringing up Roman in that regard but imagine once he finally loses his belt if the next night he wins the one Rollins currently has. There'd be a massive level of fatigue there from a viewer standpoint. I'd like to see Gunther as top champion one day but let him have a path there that exists beyond just one constant tear

What would be wrong with this? Gunther comes across as confident and his interest in the title is at least partially to show off his own ability to rehabilitate it. He could easily say that his work with the ICC is done, time to move up to the next belt.
