Dude he was in full charge of the writing for like 3 months, then went home when they wanted him to work with a committee. Sullivans group took over, ratings fell back down, they asked Russo to come in to work with a group including Bischoff few months later. He felt they needed solid consistent TV for atleast a year to turn things truly around (WWF had to do the same) but there was intense pressure from the big suits for immediate ratings, hence the intensified crash TV philosophy. He tried but they changed bookers like socks and there was so much politics that Russo didn't have to worry about in WWF where he had McMahon having his back. WCW was a mess but to blame Russo for it, even put him in top 10 reasons it died is totally asinine.

A 0.01 ratings increase meant nothing for WCW, when their live attendance and PPV business dropped. Russo never understood that, which is why he's never been able to actually draw money in wrestling, except when working under the most successful promoter in history.

And WWE drew higher ratings, higher attendances, sold more PPVs and made more money both before and after Russo was there.

Fewer people watching no doubt but not to the level you marks believe it to be that's why because WWE has actually been somewhat entertaining recently their ratings have been on the up-swing and TV viewership to advertiser's still play a massive role in making and breaking a company. A 0.01 increase? It was a 1.0 increase which is actually incredible in that short period and time and up against a WWF which was red hot thanks to Russo.

In WCW, everything was basically in the same range no matter who was booking. They were doing 2.8-3.3 ratings when it was Sullivan and when it was Russo. IIRC numbers were given an artificial boost because they got rid of the third hour. PPV numbers were down under everybody, and Russo's numbers were particularly bad. He had 3 months to build to Starrcade 99 and it drew the worst number for Starrcade in years. I seem to recall that Spring Stampede show where they reset everything did a (relatively) decent number, albeit way down from the year before. But then the David Arquette retardation happened and that killed any momentum they were trying to build.

Basically, Russo made no positive difference, but they company was already in the shit.

I think he would be great for AEW because they have a bloated roster and Russo made the lower card fun to watch. It's easier to give everybody some time when segments aim for that 5-7 minute mark. Flair and Hogan, years later, went back to WWE and still drew, but Russo couldn't do anything with them except you them to try and get himself over. They were massive draws for WCW even into the late 90s. Flair vs. Hogan in 1999 outdrew Austin vs. McMahon on PPV that same year. Russo just didn't know how to draw money, basically. His entire mentality was about ratings, which meant he'd hotshot everything to death given the chance. Which is why he was only successful with McMahon filtering his shit and being the big picture guy.

Starrcade only did 145k buys that year. Less than Mayhem the previous month, which was less than Halloween Havoc (Russo's first PPV), and all of them did worse than Road Wild had done a couple of months earlier. Attendances declined month on month too. Basically, Russo had no positive impact on business.

He'd book the Hangman/Swerve angle except Swerve kills Hangman's child. This leads to Hangman turning heel after it is revealed he's just mad at Swerve because he was planning on killing the child himself. Swerve becomes a big babyface when it is later revealed that the child was the next Hitler but Hangman stays a heel because he says if he knew that, he wouldn't have wanted to kill it.

Somewhere in here, Hangman is looking to make another one and chooses Julia Hart in white cotton panties to hold his seed but Swerve is looking to impregnate her first so she can't get pregnant from Hangman. The end result is twins and they have a match where the winner can have the losers baby aborted. I don't know where it goes from there.

A lot of the hatred for Tony Khan by insider types is because he's a smark who bought his way into the business and didn't do things the old fashioned way of being molested or sucking your way to the top. Hell, even Ric Flair sucked Bruiser Brody's dick in St. Louis.

But yeah, AEW is Reddit as hell. They operate under the assumption that everyone watching checks r/SquaredCircle at least once a day and pretty much knows everything before it happens anyways. They don't really hype anything to get you excited, they just remind you of what is going on and hope you hype yourself up. I get it, it's an IWC smark running a company he wants to watch and he doesn't want to talk down to himself. But it's wrestling for a modern TV audience, they're not going on YouTube for more than music. You can't lead them to the stories, they have to have them crammed in their throats and they have to be told how to feel. Don't be like "What a dream match!" tell them why it's a dream match and why they want to see it. Taz had the right idea during that Danielson vs Suzuki match they did in YouTube, "If you're not watching this right now then you're an idiot."
