Rock was already getting shit on by some in the crowd by late 1999 because of this, and it only got worse as the absences got lengthier. Each time Rock returned, he would get the return pop for a little while, but it would quickly turn to boos as it became clear this was just temporary. The pattern would repeat over and over, with more and more of the crowd booing him. Rock HAD to turn heel to try to ride the wave. Many in the crowd were not booing because he was so great as a heel. Rock was disliked and considered a traitor by many in the crowd still, so some of that heat was go away heat.
Those that were little kiddos in 2000 just won't remember it this way. It's like the little kids that loved the PG, Fruity Pebbles version of John Cena. They grew up and still can't understand why it was shit.
