It’s possible that Darby is unaware that he made Cornette reference. He doesn’t come off as the type to listen to wrestling podcasts or watch Cornette clips. It’s reasonable to assume Darby came up with the promo on his own and thought he created an original insult that called back to an earlier promo he gave citing “the California crew”

Regardless of where you stand on Cucknette,* it's a bad fucking idea for the babyface to spout off direct lines from a guy who's done almost nothing but shoot bury your company for five years, aside from the segment that involved the two big stars who are now working for the competition. Especially when said competition has been absolutely kicking your ass in popularity for the last two years. All it does is tell the fans that they should hate the company itself as much as any heel in the promotion.

And yes, this did work with Austin/McMahon. But Austin/McMahon worked for a number of reasons AEW can't replicate:

* Vince, the shoot owner of the company, was a natural peformer (though a terrible worker), with a fantastic look and physique, an unlimited willingness to get his hands dirty, and the WWF fans felt he was clearly in the wrong on Montréal. The Elite, who's EVP titles have been meaningless ever since Tony took over the company, have the AEW fans on their side for the Brawlout.
* The WWF was already hot before running Austin/McMahon. AEW's is at their coldest period in history.
* Even Austin/McMahon ultimately damaged the company brand by turning it heel in the fans eyes. WWF/E could afford it on account of their position, but AEW doesn't have that luxury.

Even if you shoot hate The Bucks, this angle's indefensible. Especially since Darb completely ignored all the perfectly good material he had at his disposal for the sake of it!

* He's a cuck.
