he gets the biggest pops of the match when he comes in at 4:00 and when he hits the spear at 8:00. he may not have been as over as his peak, but still nobody else was more over than he was in wcw. he was basically their only attraction by the end

I'm of the opinion that workrate is probably the least important tool a wrestler can have. But in 1998 big guy like Goldberg doing wheel kicks, heel hooks and back flips was absolutely workrate shit.

Imagine how good Goldberg could have been if he actually applied himself. His matches against DDP and his Wrestlemania match Lesnar proved he could be great. He was just lazy half the time.

It's headcanon propagated by all the lookbacks on the rise and fall of WCW, everywhere, for years. Same with Hogan's popularity. I'm watching WCW right now and laughing at how fucking over Hogan is. By all accounts that I've seen, heard, and read, he was supposedly too old and everyone couldn't stand him. Fucking kek, crowds are going insane for him. The only issue was WCW just wasn't writing the greatest storylines or making the smartest decisions at the end. If prime Stone Cold showed up at AEW tomorrow, it would still be a shit show that nobody would watch, because everything else about the show sucks.

97-99 Goldberg is unbelievably underrated in ring. Leapfrogging Sting, could do back flips and handsprings and shit watch some of his first matches, he was green as hell and couldn't structure a match to save his life but had a lot of athleticism and impressive moves, stick him in with a veteran or someone like DDP who scripts shit and he was impressive.
His ringwork unironically started going to shit the minute he kicked Bret in the head. Only good match of his I remember after that is Steiner at Fall Brawl, or the Brock rematch

That’s not his issue. His biggest problem is that he didn’t really understand wrestling, so he couldn’t grasp concepts like selling and shit all that well and he didn’t understand the backstage politics. I think if he understood the business like he did when he came back in 2016 back in 98, he would’ve told Nashetty to fuck himself. But, he probably would’ve lost to someone before then. He wanted to be a superhero because he didn’t know any better and it made other guys politic against him.

False. Not only did I watch wrestling live back then, but I've been rewatching both Raw and Nitro over the past couple of years and I'm currently in spring of 1999. WCW was piping in the Goldberg chants in 1998. Yes Goldberg was still over, but he was NOT beloved and had the whole crowd behind him. In fact, Kevin Nash was getting the bigger pops at Starrcade 98 and Goldberg was even getting boos.

Also, many of those matches weren't even televised. The crowd initially loved the Goldberg gimmick because his matches were short and energetic squashes. But that simply didn't work when Goldberg won the world title from Hogan. He got massively exposed when he had to work longer matches, and he didn't work well as world champ due to his severe limitations (can't work, can't cut a promo). And no, the crowd wasn't stupid. They picked up on it and got bored of him outside of seeing the spear/jackhammer. The reactions show that, and that's why Goldberg chants were piped in. They were organic for only a few months in 1997. Seethe if you want. It's true.

I'm not a Nash fan, but I can't deny that he was getting the best babyface reactions of anyone in WCW heading into Starrcade and then at Starrcade as well. I get that it generated attention, but the fingerpoke of doom was an awful angle that served as a reset button for the nWo. It was a shock at the time because the Wolfpack was over big as babyfaces, so for Nash to just hand the title back to Hogan after all of 1998, it just seemed nonsensical. People were expecting a Wolfpack v Black and White war with Nash v Hogan as the centerpiece. Oh well.

Watching the 'Last Call' Scott Hall gimmick back again was really hard, both because Hall had a legitimate drinking problem at the time and continued to for years, and because I have also struggled with the same demons. The gimmick was not only in poor taste but it wasn't even used effectively to get anyone over. It only served to hurt Hall, who basically no sold it because he's just got too much charisma and can turn the crowd to his side on a dime. But still, it was a wasted period of his career.

No, now you're going to far in the other direction now. WCW wasn't killed by any one incident. It was killed because Turner Broadcasting cut their legs out with their demands and then eventually forced a shutdown and sold it to Vince. Ratings weren't even the issue. Turner execs simply didn't like pro wrestling and wanted it gone, despite knowing what they would replace it with would do lower ratings.

You're right about Nash being the bigger face even in late 1998. He was clearly cheered over Goldberg at Starrcade, for instance. But while we could have enjoyed a better wrestling product if they never did the Fingerpoke of Doom angle, it wouldn't have saved the company.

Bischoff wasn't in control in the later days, and he didn't even book the Fingerpoke of Doom. So I'm not really sure how it's his fault. Bischoff even tried to buy WCW with the Fusient media deal but they sold to Vince instead.
