Does anyone remember the myriad of Goldberg alikes that WCW signed after he made it big?
Emory Hale comes to mind. Goldberg if they didn't give him the streak. So essentially awful.

Yes, but the kind of people who play competitive yugioh are unironically the same kind of people who watch AEW. The game is dead as shit in terms of getting new players and it will never garner the kind of popularity it had in the 2000s again. Look at Master Duel as an example, drew the absolute fucking house when it first came out, peaked at 120k players on steam, then the casuals and normalfags got filtered by the comptrannies + some of them jobbed to the new mechanjcs and the comptroons are basically the only people who play anymore as it's steadily been stuck at 20k players for almost 2 years now. Not bad numbers at all of course and the game will definitely be kept afloat for long, but it tells you all you need to know.

Just checked, peak amount of players was 260k upon release which is absolutely nuts considering the ad campaign was minimal and it just kinda dropped unannounced. There's absolutely no doubt that there is still huge interest in the game itself, but the inaccessible mechanics and the faggy hardcores will always filter the new players who just want to have le fun. Hell, I played the game my whole life, played it nonstop 24/7 since the start of 2020 as covid kicked in and I didnt have anything to do, dropped it in early 2023, trying to pick it up again but I'm struggling aside from the one deck I played for decades

Well it didn't help that Master Duel has its own format that is wildly different from the TCG.
Plus it, like any other product Konami puts out, really fails to capture what playing the game now is like, and what to expect. So players don't appreciate what the game is now and start choking on the mechanics before they get to feel like they've really even played the game.
