That's what I said, the new generation in general was odd because the WWE tried to copy the 80's style while having 'athletic' wrestlers, which resulted in people turning the channel to WCW where there were Big Men doing Big Men things

WWE try to retcons Shawn into being known as the guy everyone knew was this amazing wrestler, but in reality everyone only saw the gimmick of him being a sleazy metrosexual as the heartbreak kid which is why I think he had such a bad reign. That's more than enough talent to headline PPV's for a entire year or two, if your world champion is any kind of draw at all. The reality is Shawn was a massive anti-draw and not good enough as a wrestler or character to be a main event star.

The difference being Vader was a WCW guy in stranger's land. He refused to wash his gear and smelled like rotten shit in the ring and outside. Vince's guys got a pass for being assholes because they built the cred with him. If you were both an outsider and an asshole you got the Vader treatment.

You can't play fantasy booking with the new generation without remembering that Vince was going through a short phase where, like Tony, he was a mark for his favorite wrestler and would try to make things work out for them. Bret WAS champion, from March 94 to November 94 and then again from November 95 to April 96. The ratings and attendance weren't much better. The booking and the roster were just in a sad state at this point. It wasn't necessarily the guy on top; Diesel's reign just shot the dying animal. The booking was nonexistent, RAW felt like a house show. No engaging main event storylines, unwatchable undercard. Shit like The Goodwins and Duke the Dumpster Drosee shitting up the show. I don't know what Vince was smoking to get over the loss of Hogan. Austin was slowly getting over but it wasn't until Bret and Pillman launched him into another stratosphere that the show would get watchable again. Pillman's influence on the business as a whole goes unnoticed in conversations. He does not receive enough credit, a true visionary.

The reality is Shawn was only a champion for half a year in 96 after 2 years of Bret and Nash being the only two champions from 94 to 96 until Shawn's first reign. He went into WM13 as the champion and "retired" after that. You can't really blame Shawn when his combined reign during the entire New Generation period isn't even a year.
