Dave on WWE winning promotion of the year
>“After a record-setting year when it came to big show viewership and gates, and being among the most consistent ratings draws in television, the WWE captured this award over AEW, which had won it the past three years.
>WWE’s success with multiple stadium shows, creating major matches throughout the year and pulling away from AEW after what at times was a very competitive race. It was the first time WWE had won this award since the Attitude Era, a combination of their turn around, and the struggles at the box office of AEW, NJPW and Stardom.
>It’s funny because given the news of the past month, it does come off badly that even though from a business and growth of popularity standpoint WWE absolutely should have won, as a company and business them winning this week really plays out badly timing wise. One could argue that the vast majority of votes came before the lawsuit, and that the negative Vince McMahon stuff was in 2022, and in 2023 the only McMahon story was him powering his way back in, the merger, and many new deals. As a business, it’s a strong choice but there is a real argument in 2024 that things far more important than angles and gate records should be considered.”
